H&M's first SEA outlet to open here next year

By MELISSA LWEE

SWEDISH fast-fashion giant H & M Hennes & Mauritz AB (H&M) announced yesterday that it will be making its foray into South-east Asia by opening a store in Singapore next autumn.

'We look forward to opening our first store in South-east Asia,' says H&M's CEO Karl-Johan Persson. 'There is great potential for expansion in this highly populated and fashion conscious region, and Orchard Road in Singapore is the perfect first step for this.'

The roughly 3,000 sq m store will be in Orchard Building, taking over the space that currently houses California Fitness gym.

Orchard Building is owned by Allsland, which is wholly owned by Henry Ngo, the chairman and managing director of Bonvests Holdings that owns and manages Liat Towers.

'We are very honoured that H&M has chosen to house their first store here at Orchard Building and we definitely hope that this will drive more traffic to the area,' said a spokesperson from Orchard Building's management.

'With Cathay Cineleisure and the opening of 313@Somerset and *SCAPE in the vicinity, we think that the location is very ideal for them in the sense that there are a lot of the young and fashion-discerning who hang out in the area who will be very excited to be able to shop at H&M.'

According to H&M's head of investor relations Nils Vinge, the store will be 100 per cent owned and operated by H&M, which has been the retailer's preferred strategy in all the 38 markets that it currently operates in (with the exception of the Middle East and Israel). It first entered the Asian market some three years ago in Hong Kong and Shanghai and can already be found in Japan, South Korea and various cities in China.

'We are planning to open outlets in Croatia, Romania, Morocco and Tunisia next year as well so depending on when it opens, my guess is that the Singapore outlet would probably be our 42nd or 43rd location,' said Mr Vinge who added that they are open to exploring other locations in Singapore.

'Singapore will be our first outlet in the region but hopefully not be our last. South-east Asia is a very interesting market - it is fast growing and there is a lot of interest in fashion. Before we expand, however, we want to understand the market better and we think that Singapore's the best place to start testing out how well H&M can do in the region.'

The news of H&M expanding into Singapore could very well have a positive spillover effect on the local retail industry, or so believes Sulian Tan-Wijaya, head of retail and lifestyle at Savills Singapore.

'If you take a more macro perspective, I believe that this news will boost the confidence level in Singapore's retail scene,' said Ms Tan-Wijaya who added that Savills Singapore and Hong Kong have a good relationship with H&M and are working with the retailer on their expansion plans in Singapore.

'I think that the moment H&M enters the market, it will inspire many other fashion brands that are contemplating expanding into Singapore to fast forward their plans. In fact, H&M is not the only new market fashion brand looking for large flagship spaces in Singapore and my take is that this is a real growing trend here which can only mean good things for the local retail scene.'

Investing in the future of others

Alumnus donates $100,000 to NTU's endowment bursary fund. By NARENDRA AGGARWAL

'Education provides hope to break out of the poverty cycle, opens doors for a better future and enables one to contribute more significantly to our society.'
- Daniel Chew

WE usually invest our hard earned money for a better future - for ourselves and our family. This is an uplifting story of a young man from a modest background giving away $100,000 of his hard earned money to invest in the future of university students who are motivated to excel in life but need financial assistance.

Daniel Chew, an alumnus of Nanyang Business School (NBS) at Nanyang Technological University, has donated the money to the university's endowment bursary fund in honour of his parents.

At 37, Mr Chew is the only Asian in petrochemical giant Shell's global tax leadership team. He is regional business tax manager, Upstream International Asia, at Shell's regional headquarters in Singapore.

'Having benefited from bursaries myself during my school years, I know at first hand how important such help is for those who do not have the financial means to pursue their educational dreams,' says the father of three children aged 10, seven and three.

'The bursaries and the money I raised by giving tuition helped see me through my first degree which was instrumental in providing me a headstart in my career,' says Mr Chew, who obtained his Bachelor of Accountancy degree with first-class honours from NBS.

'Education provides hope to break out of the poverty cycle, opens doors for a better future and enables one to contribute more significantly to our society. Thus, I find it gratifying to reach out to promising youths who need that helping hand to complete their university education and fulfil their dreams in life. This is one way of giving back to society,' he adds.

At Shell, Mr Chew says, he enjoys the challenges at work, learning and contributing, and leading regional and global teams to deliver significant value to the business.

'While no doubt the work is very demanding, I always strive to achieve excellence, have a work-life balance and aim to make a difference in whatever I do,' he says in an interview.

Mr Chew has fond memories of the time spent at NBS as he led an active life both in and outside the classroom. In year one, he was honorary general secretary of the NTU Students' Union and in year two, he became president of the union. In the third year, he founded and chaired the NTU Students' Fund.

While at NTU, he learnt to manage his time well, spending 40 hours per week on union activities and studying for the same number of hours every week. In addition, he gave tuition, which provided him financial independence since his army days, and spent time on keeping fit.

Mr Chew says NBS equipped him well for his working life as the scope of studies was wide. It gave him exposure and awareness, as well as technical skills. He has turned out to be confident, able to self-manage and be responsible in decision-making. NBS also honed his communications skills as well as his ability to think analytically.

After graduating from NTU with a Bachelor in Accountancy degree, Mr Chew started his career at Arthur Andersen as a tax consultant. It was a busy life as he put in an average 60 to 80 hours weekly - and sometimes working more than 100 hours a week.

Despite his busy schedule, Mr Chew wanted to spend time paying back to society by serving the less privileged. And with support from his employer, he started a mentoring programme for underprivileged children in 1996. He continues to manage the programme today.

After Arthur Andersen, Mr Chew worked with Caltex, Johnson & Johnson and Avago Technologies. He joined Shell Petroleum in 2008.

Mr Chew plans to continue his career at Shell, looking out for global headquarters and overseas postings to enrich his professional life and also to establish stronger organisational connections, while achieving strong financial independence.

Mr Chew says his home-maker wife Joanna is his strong and unwavering supporter and advisor. As such, he owes much of his success in life to her.

Potter Love & deadly hallows... (20 Nov 2010)

Finally get to watched my harry epic the 7th... Oh i am hungry for the part 2 right after getting out.

Photobucket

Seventh chapter in wizard saga is a dark and dangerous affair.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 1 have the third-biggest midnight opening gross ever -- $24 million.

The story harrowing metamorphosis from child to adult. More a mood piece than an action movie, though there are plenty of genuinely scary thrills thus it might not be up to the magic action expectation for some anxious waited fans or not.

Focus is on the three best friends set off to search for horcruxes.

Photobucket
Look how they have grown!

Grint gets to show off Ron’s simmering resentment, while Hermione has matured into a resourceful, courageous heroine. I am loving more and more of Hermione.

One of my most liked and touched moments of the film is when Ron deserts his friends in a fit of rage. To console the heartbroken Hermione, Harry leads her in a goofy dance, while Nick Cave’s haunting O Children crackles in the background on a transistor radio. It’s one of the few scenes in the slavishly faithful film series not written by Rowling herself, and yet it feels deeply authentic. No longer kids, but not quite adults, the pair share a moment of not-entirely-platonic connection that captures the entirety of their shared history.

Here take a peep of what is going in it if you havent watch..
