Jetstar's long-haul airline takes flight in Singapore
By CHAN YUPING

(SINGAPORE) Jetstar launched Singapore's first long-haul, low-fare airline yesterday, offering two-class services direct to Melbourne and Auckland on new Airbus A330-200 planes.

It hopes to attract the growing number of Singaporeans who study in Melbourne or Auckland, as well as business people who travel to these cities.

Jetstar claims its 'Price Beat Guarantee' will make travel 'more accessible and affordable for everyone'.

Its new offering includes a Starclass business class cabin with 38 leather seats, a range of meals and in-flight entertainment for customers seeking an upgraded product.

Daily return services to Melbourne will start on Dec 16 this year, and similar services to Auckland on March 17 next year.

Chong Phit Lian, chief operating officer of Jetstar Asia and Valuair, said the move 'reaffirms Jetstar's long-term commitment to provide greater low-fare flying opportunities for all Singaporeans'.

According to her, the Singapore-Auckland route is now under-served and Jetstar's service will bring 'much needed future competition'.

Jetstar has grown significantly since it was launched in 2004, with a current fleet of 65 aircraft. As a fully owned subsidiary of Qantas Airways, it hopes to grow the Qantas group's presence in Asia.

'Connecting our three largest operations in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore strengthens each of these businesses and builds a solid foundation for future growth beyond Singapore to North Asia and Europe,' said Jetstar chief executive Bruce Buchanan.

He said that as Jetstar moves forward, it is 'very keen' to tap the North Asia market through a strong network forged by strategic partnerships.
